Boating

South Florida has a long and rich maritime history. It’s ports have reached global prominence in trade, commerce and the cruise industry. The area has also been at the top of the recreational boating industry. It has hosted the The Miami International Boat show for over 70 years and held numerous boat races and Regattas that for decades have stirred the waters of popular water sports locations like Government Cut and the Marine Stadium.

5/10/1982: It started as a 1967 Red Volkswagen. The juniors from Killian High School got it from Spink's Junk Yard and turned it into a wacky vessel that raced at the Miami Marine Stadium Sunday afternoon. At the front is Steven Beiley, 17, at the wheel is Mario Luis, 20, and reaching for a lost oar in the stern of the vessel is David Miller, 17. Beiley and Miller are juniors at Killian, Luis was just along for the ride. There was also another man aboard but is blocked by Luis. He is Jeff Dvorr (yes that is the way it is spelled) The three Killian boy bought the vehicle.

10/12/1991, Brian Smith/Miami Herald: Andy Coker kicks up a fantail wake as he posts the fastest time in a 5-liter qualifying round. Coker however was penalized for a false start dropping him to fourth place in the heat, still good enough to advance to the next round.

10/23/1965, Eamon Kennedy/Miami Herald: Ship Shape. Majestic ships docked at Pier 1 are happy reminder that the Port of Miami is doing a right perky business these days. For example, ship tonnage moving through the port during fiscal 1965 totaled 873,496 against 841,132 last year. Passengers totaled 265,090 for 1965 (through Sept. 30) as opposed to 252,444 for the same period in 1964. Port revenues showed the most dramatic gain though -- $1,049,536 for this year against $942,739 last year. Port director Arthur Darlow said it's the first year revenues have surged past the million dollar mark.
