Marjory Stoneman Douglas

The “first lady of the Everglades,” Marjory Stoneman Douglas was a pioneering environmentalist who wrote The Everglades: The River of Grass in 1947, the same year she attended the dedication of Everglades National Park. Douglas, the daughter of the Miami Herald’s founding editor, Frank Stoneman, died in 1998 at age 108.
